News of the WTF variety, folks. Word is out that that classic 1989 movie Heathers, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, is being developed into a TV series. Join me in collectively weeping.
If a TV series of Heathers was done well, it would be hilarious. I love a good dark comedy, and Heathers certainly fits the bill (as the two lead characters set about murdering, well, just about anyone they can). But how is that possibly sustainable as an ongoing TV series? Especially if the show landed on a network, which wouldn’t dare indulge in the level of violence and content necessary to pull off a really dark, delicious version of Heathers.
My big fear is that the show would be a totally neutered, watered-down version of the original and just be another cliched bitchy-girls-vs-outcasts storyline. What could make it interesting is if they could entice Christian Slater and Winona Ryder into starring in the series, and acknowledge the passing of time, showing a grown-up Veronica and her ghostly pal J.D. Although that could end up equally terrible…
So, what’s the consensus? Is a Heathers TV show the sacrilegious scavenging of a classic film or the start of something beautiful?
